Moving Sound Sounding Movement

Calgary 2 Day Workshop
Saturday Oct 13 - Sunday Oct 14, 2018
10:00 am - 5:00pm

W&M Physical Theatre, Bay #9 4005 9 St SE, Calgary

How might communication become more impactful and satisfying through integrating embodiment, intention and support? This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the marriage of sound and physicality / breath and language / ease and connection. Join Guest Artist Val Campbell and Dawn McCaugherty in this investigation at the intersection of the body/mind, emanating from source via Authentic Movement and voice.

After teaching together at the University of Calgary for the past 17 years, each pursuing their individual research interests, Val and Dawn are excited to team up in a discovery of how the practices of voice and Authentic Movement might extend, enhance and enliven one another. There is a fertility and sensitivity in these practices that offers great potential for creative, artistic and personal inspiration. Sharing and developing this work with others interested in expanding the capacity for imagination, self-expression and physical and vocal presence will be joyful and empowering.

Authentic Movement is a body-based discipline, a physical practice. The discipline of Authentic Movement is rooted in the principles of expressive dance and Jungian Depth Psychology. It is practiced in a wide range of fields for personal/creative insight investigation, mystical contemplation, and the expressive and performing arts. The practice invites and teaches the ability to listen to and follow deep internal cues from the body. Its potential is to bring to consciousness previously hidden elements of unique personal, spiritual, and creative aspects of being through the tangible experience of the body. Voice is also a body-based discipline. The voice is produced by physical actions and its freedom and power can be supported or limited by the way in which the physical body moves or is restricted. Described by Alfred Wolfsohn as ‘the muscle of the soul’, voice has the capacity to reveal to the world our inmost thoughts, feelings, desires, fears, passions and all, once we have established a true connection with the body and the being. To do so, we must find breath, the courage to be vulnerable and the trust to speak our truth.

Researching the relationship of Authentic Movement and voice offers many possible rich applications to communication and performance. The first day of the workshop we will be laying the foundations of the vocal and Authentic Movement practices in order to create a strong container for deep investigation of the intersection of these practices on the second day. Also, on the second day we will begin working with text, exploring how thoughts and sensations might emerge through the body as spoken words.

Please choose and memorize well a piece of heightened or poetic text 1 – 1 ½ minutes in length. This should be a piece with which you resonate and feel a deep personal connection, and that you wish to explore further. It might be a poem or a speech from a play, a passage from a novel or speech, song lyrics or a selection from a spiritual text, for instance.

Work in the studio will begin promptly at 10 a.m. There will be an hour lunch break 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and other breaks as needed during the day.

We highly recommend signing up for both days but if that isn’t possible, please contact Dawn or Val to discuss the possibility of attending only one day. The cost for this will be $100.
