A dance-theatre workshop to train the body and the imagination by working from vivid internal conditions expressed through intense physicality.  Using the postmodern Japanese dance form, Butoh, as a foundation we work to reveal the dance’s inner life of authenticity, depth and paradox, and to express one’s humanity in all of its irrationality, ugliness, beauty and mirth.

This will be the Death of Me: Butoh, Voice, Text and Performance Workshop with Denise Fujiwara and Gerry Trentham
December 11 – 15, 2017
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Location:  509 Parliament Street, Studio C

“This thought is as a death” - from sonnet 64, William Shakespeare

In a quest to reveal authentic living thought aligned with compelling physical action and presence, Fujiwara and Trentham have been investigating the power, humour and imagination involved in dying metaphorically.

Practicing staged death creates urgency and essential presence in the performer and challenges notions of “self” and inner obstacles.  For all who are dying to perform with vitality, we will work to embody vocal and physical performance with presence and imagination through the dance-theatre form of Butoh and voice-freeing Linklater based practice to bring text to life.

ONLINE WEBINAR WITH GERRY TRENTHAM

This interdisciplinary workshop is open to artists of all forms and those interested in artistic practice.

Gerry Trentham guides participants through a series of creative and imaginative physical/vocal/writing practices that elicit performance material and/or performance scores that reveal the individual’s distinctive artistic voice.

Through dialogue and practical assignments the program is designed around individual participant needs and will be explored through two sets of sessions, an individual coaching and one final group meeting. The first set of sessions is dedicated to responding – building awareness of personal blocks that set free writing and performance with a distinctive point of view. The second set of sessions (revealing) teaches a process that develops and refines this perspective, illuminating and resonating meaning toward an audience in the artist’s preferred form.

Each set of sessions consists of two 1.5 hour webinars where Gerry shares practices, offers perspectives, and assigns practical tasks.   The 45 minute private coaching allows each participant to ask questions and be provided guidance with their assigned tasks. A final group session shares the work with others in the group and provides guidance for next steps.
